Years ago, I dove into the waters surrounding Lipe Island in Thailand, instantly captivated by the dreamy underwater world. The vibrant and magnificent corals danced gracefully with the gentle currents, like a mysterious painting woven by the ocean in brilliant colors, unfolding in the blue sea. But recently, I returned to those waters only to find a scene of devastation. The once dazzling coral reefs were now dull, lifeless, and crumbling, remnants of their former glory. This stark contrast made me deeply aware of nature’s incredible fragility and transience—a sorrowful, enduring reminder. This experience strengthened my resolve to take on the mission of marine conservation. During a summer program at Columbia University, I studied public policy and climate change, where I had the fortune of meeting a keen and talented young environmental writer. Her profound insights and contributions to environmental protection inspired me, and over time, OceanInsomnia began to take shape.

Oceaninsomnia | Clean. Protect. Conserve.
“OceanInsomnia” (https://www.oceaninsomnia.com) was founded in 2023 by a group of high school students and environmentalists concerned about the plight of the ocean. The organization addresses urgent issues caused by plastic waste, which disrupts marine ecosystems and leads to coral bleaching due to rising temperatures. "Insomnia" symbolizes the relentless strain on the ocean, akin to an unending, restless sleeplessness. This distinctive name reflects the ongoing disturbances in the ocean's ecological balance due to human activities, resulting in a loss of its inherent harmony and tranquility. The Chinese name, “澜沧夜绪” (Lan Cang Ye Xu), evokes contemplation and reverie of the vast ocean under the night sky, while also expressing my deep and unfinished sentiments for the sea.
